The Intersection of words and pictures – Collaborative Installations with Margaret Campbell and others

Between the years of 2003 and 2009, Mary Zehngut and Margaret Campbell collaborated on installations inspired by writing. Certain poems and passages from literature sparked visual images, with words seen and felt as objects. The title of the first installation “Physical Sentences” describes this synthesis.

The writings of Gertrude Stein, Samuel Beckett, James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, and E.B. White inspired these installations. In “Linguiduct”, diagrams of sentences describe a bridge, the poem “Patriarchal Poetry” is inscribed on a paper tuxedo shirt, and in “Housedress”, a draped dress form speaks to the mothering instinct.

Some of the works were created by a larger group: the talents of Tess Mondello, Maggie Pare Farrell, and Demetra Stamos added fullness and depth.
